This
exquisite piece of Nevada turquoise weighs 5 7/8 pounds, an exceptional
chunk of turquoise, more than adequate for the sculpture that Mr. Him
elected to carve.
Size: 6" long x 5" wide x 4 1/2" tall

I was talking to Herbert Him and looking at some turquoise that I had back
in April 2001, 2-1/2 to 3 weeks ago, when I pulled out a big piece. It weighed approximately eight or
nine pounds; his eyes lit up and showed a great deal of enthusiasm as we
both looked at the piece or rock we smiled at each other and started
laughing, and Herbert Him looked at me and said do you see the bear Joe? My reply
was "yes".
And at that point the turquoise came to life, and we discussed the
smaller items and Herbert proceeded to turn this basic piece of turquoise
into an exquisite work of art combining contemporary with tradition.
We shot a picture of the raw stone at one of Herbert Him's favorite places
"a su a" a mountain on the reservation not too far from his
house. When
the carving was finished we returned and shot a picture or two of the
finished piece at the same location, the story told of this area is of the
salt woman who went through the hole in the mountain and traveled to the
Salt Lake and came to rest.
This mountain is definitely pleasing to the eye and soul; a
beautiful creation in itself.
This carving from Herbert is the first one in a series of four, the name given
to the carving is
wo:kwin"ne (1).
The names meaning is (more than 1 subject) this piece in my opinion
is one of the most spectacular works in his career ; he has
taken a lifetime of experiences and talent and comprise them into one work
of art.
Take
the time to look this masterpiece over; mention it to a friend and let
them share in a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Herbert's work has taken the contemporary and
mixed it with the traditional which gives us an extraordinary mix. He
mentioned Mr. Hauser said to always have pride in your work, this
ethic seem to stick with Herbert all through his carving career.
Every carving I have ever seen, he has been very proud of and put
as much heart and soul as possible into it.
Another lesson learned from Mr. Hauser was the extraordinary
ability to capture muscle tone and definition of any animal that he
decided to carve; he attributes this relationship with his work to Mr.
Hauser and his expression of how the artist must develop this form of
expression in his work.
Herbert Him really enjoys his work and it shows in
each and every piece. |
