Richolite
- An amazing material. There is only one deposit in the world! It is in
the southern half of the new Mexico. Its color goes from translucent
yellow to a jade light green to an opaque white to yellow with black
lines. This material is probably some of the highest
grade sculpturing stone in the world. It has been used for
hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of years by Native Americans. Richolite
takes a very high polish and carves exquisitely.
Back somewhere in the '20s I think Tiffany
had a claim on this mine, and produced some very finely hand crafted
products from this material.. Collectors this is one of the
rarest materials that I have ever mined or used it's quality can only
be described as high grade. If you have never been to Richolite
Canyon I'm going to take you there now. As we enter the canyon reptilian
life is present everywhere you look. Lizards, frogs and snakes
everywhere. A hawk perched high above keeps an eye open for all
movement on the floor of the canyon . As if to be shopping for dinner.
Time seems to stand still ,as your eyes take in everything, your mind and
spirit feel the presents of life as it was meant to be. As you
stand there all things come into focus .take a deep breath, look around
you it is incredible. Funny how animals take on the color and the
formation of their surroundings. The animals did exactly that, taking on
the color and look of the canyon, In the rock related books they call
Richolite the reptile stone because of its extraordinary color. Nature,
one of God's great gifts to be enjoyed by all .
Imagine a Canyon that's approximately 3 blocks
wide at the entrance and narrowing down to 1 1/2 blocks wide at the
back.. The walls of the canyon are approximately 700 feet high
of both sides and goes straight up, very steep walls. The bottom of the
canyon is filled with sand and big boulders that have washed down
throughout the years of hard rains. The color is from a translucent yellow
to an opaque green and yellow with black lines, extraordinary to see veins
of rock that are approximately 500-2000 feet thick coming
right up out of the ground and shooting up into the sky. The first
time I saw Richolite Canyon I couldn't quite believe my eyes . I've mined
rock for quite a few years and have been to allot of different mines ,this
one stands out ,to be truly unique it's probably the most beautiful
deposits of stone that I have ever seen. I couldn't quite believe
what I was seeing what a beautiful place to spend the day and the plus is
to mine some rock too. At the back of Richolite Canyon there is a
beautiful waterfall and when the monsoons come in the canyon
turns into a paradise. located in the middle of the desert, what a
wonderment this is for the senses. There we are a visit to Richolite
canyon smelling the wildflowers and feeling the natural beauty of the
stone, we definitely have to plan another journey to the canyon.
Now that we have traveled to Richolite Canyon
the beauty and extraordinary formation of this rock is truly incredible.
Sometimes it's hard to express in words how beautiful and magnificent some
places are here on earth. I am looking forward to talking to you all
again, remember the sun rises and sets all around you every day no
matter how difficult things may seem, have a great day see you on the
trail.
The color varies from yellow to translucent green. Richolite is
about 4-5 in hardness on the Mohs scale. Richolite is a high-grade carving
stone and is a pleasure to carve.
